The best way to start the day, in my opinion, is with a beautiful, pink, fresh, and delicious Cherry Chocolate Smoothie! This smoothie recipe is not only tasty but full of healthy and vegan ingredients. It’s like drinking a milkshake for breakfast!

As always, this vegan cherry smoothie is naturally sweetened and uses only the best ingredients. None of the 5 ingredients you need are hard to find and all complement each other perfectly when blended together. Top your smoothie with cocoa nibs, small raspberries, and a cherry on top for an elegant presentation.

If you’re looking to indulge in the most scrumptious breakfast ever, I highly recommend sipping on your smoothie while enjoying a slice or two of my Cherry Banana Bread on the side.

Ingredients You Need

5 ingredients and you’re done! Use in-season fruits as much as possible for the best flavors.

Here are the ingredients you need to make your own cherry chocolate smoothie:

  • Banana
  • Almond milk
  • Cherries
  • Raspberries
  • Raw cocoa powder

Can I Use Frozen Fruit In This Smoothie?

Nobody likes a warm smoothie! Frozen raspberries, cherries, and banana are best to use in smoothies because they make the smoothie extra cold and resemble an ice cream-like texture. You can buy these already frozen or add fresh fruit to a container and freeze it yourself (just make sure to pit the cherries and peel the bananas first).

How To Make This Recipe

This layered smoothie is blended in 2 batches – first with the banana and almond milk, then the cherries and raspberries. The cocoa powder is added last for a rich, chocolatey finish.

Here’s how to make your own cherry chocolate smoothie:

  1. Remove the pits from the cherries. Discard the pits and put the cherries aside.
  2. Remove the banana peel, discard, and place the banana in the blender. Add in the almond milk and blend until creamy.
  3. Divide the banana mixture into 3 equal parts. Leave 1 part in the blender and pour the other 2 in separate bowls or glasses.
  4. Next, add the cherries and raspberries to the blender and blend until smooth. Lastly, stir in the cocoa powder with a spoon until it’s combined with the berry mixture.
  5. Pour the rest of the smoothie mixture over top of the banana layer in the 2 glasses. Top with a cherry and enjoy!

Helpful Recipe Tips

Follow these helpful tips to make the best cherry chocolate smoothie ever:

Pitting The Cherries

The pits from the cherries will need to be removed before being added to the blender (if using fresh cherries). To do this, cut the cherries in half and remove the pit with your fingers, or poke a chopstick through the center of the cherry to remove the pit.

Layer Or Blend Together

This smoothie recipe is layered, meaning we’re first blending the banana and milk together, adding it to the glasses, then layering the blended cherry and berry mixture over top. If you’re in a rush, feel free to blend everything together all at once. The smoothie will still look beautiful and taste amazing.

Serving Sizes

This dairy-free smoothie recipe serves 2 people. Double or triple the batch and pour a glass for each family member. This smoothie can be served for breakfast or as a healthy dessert option, just like my Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream.

Tools Needed

The only tool you need for this recipe is a blender. High powered is best, but a regular blender will work just as well (it may just take a little longer).

Recipe Variations

It’s very easy to make this smoothie recipe your own. Mix up the flavors or ingredients or follow my recommended variations:

  • Any type of plant-based milk will work in this recipe. If nuts aren’t your thing, try soy, oat, or coconut milk instead.
  • If you’re using fresh fruit and berries in the smoothie, feel free to add 2 to 3 ice cubes to be blended with the banana and cherry mixtures. This will help make the consistency smooth and ice cold.
  • This recipe can easily be made into a protein smoothie by adding a scoop of your favorite protein powder. Alternatively, add a tablespoon of your favorite plant-based protein like chia seeds or hemp hearts.
  • Use natural or Dutch cocoa powder if you can’t find raw cocoa. I suggest using raw because it has many more health benefits, such as boosting our immune systems and protecting us from cancer.
  • Don’t have raspberries at home? Feel free to swap them out for strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries instead.
