Sugar free apple granola makes a delicious breakfast.

When the chilly weather hits, it means it’s time to pull out the warm and comforting ingredients like apples, cinnamon, and oats! My recipe for Gluten-Free Apple Granola is the perfect fall breakfast. Crunchy oats, comforting cinnamon, and lots of nuts and fruit will fill you up and get your morning started on the right track.

Just 1 bowl is packed with fiber, proteins, and good fats. The apple helps with its natural sweetness and Ceylon cinnamon will warm you up and fill your home with an irresistible fragrance. Plus, this recipe is refined-sugar free, so no need to worry about the inevitable sugar crash that comes with storebought granola!

Make this in 30 minutes and enjoy it for weeks. It stores perfectly and can be enjoyed for breakfast or as a kid-friendly after-school snack!

Ingredients you need

Easy and gluten-free ingredients are all you need. I bet you have most of these in your home already! Make sure to use Ceylon cinnamon for maximum health benefits and the best flavor.

These are the ingredients you need:

  • Gluten-free old fashioned rolled oats
  • Pecans, cashews, and almonds
  • Ceylon cinnamon
  • Applesauce
  • Coconut oil
  • Raisins and dried apples

Do I have to use gluten-free oats?

You don’t have to make this recipe with gluten-free oats (or even oats at all). Use regular old fashioned rolled oats or another type of grain if you wish. Keep the total quantities the same but replace some of the oats with buckwheat, quinoa, or quinoa flakes.

Just make sure you aren’t using quick oats in this recipe. They have the tendency to soak up liquid very quickly and could turn to mush before the granola has a chance to roast in the oven.

What is Ceylon cinnamon?

Did you know that there are 2 types of cinnamon? Ceylon cinnamon is a healthier option to its counterpart, cassia cinnamon. Ceylon, or “true cinnamon”, is a higher quality spice and doesn’t contain unhealthy amounts of coumarin, which could be toxic.

You can use cassia cinnamon if that’s all you have at home but only use 1 teaspoon as the flavor will be much stronger.

Hearty granola is a beautyful way to start e new day. It's packed with fiber and proteins.

How to make gluten-free apple granola

Making homemade granola is surprisingly easy. As it roasts in the oven, it becomes super crunchy, clustery, and will fill your home with the comforting smells of apple and cinnamon. You’ll never want to buy storebought granola again!

This is how you make it:

  1. Preheat your oven to 150ºC / 300ºF. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Mix the oats, pecans, cashews, almonds, and Ceylon cinnamon in a large bowl.
  3. In a measuring cup, mix the melted coconut oil with the applesauce. Pour it over top of the dry ingredients and mix well.
  4. Spread the oat mixture onto your prepared baking sheet and use a spatula to spread it out into an even layer. Place it in the oven and roast for 30 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when it’s fragrant and golden-brown.
  5. Remove the granola from the oven and leave it to cool completely. Break it up and pour the apple granola into a large bowl and mix in the raisins and dried apple.

Helpful recipe tips

  • Leave the granola in the oven for the full 30 minutes. Leaving it alone will help to create crunchy and delicious oat clusters.
  • Feel free to change up the nuts to find your favorite combination. You may also like the addition of seeds, like pumpkin, sunflower, or hemp seeds.
  • Serve a bowl with your favorite dairy-free milk, with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream, or with warm, spiced apples.

Storing

Add the cooled granola to a sealed jar or container. It can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
